BLACK WALNUT CAKE

1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
1/2 cup Crisco
2 cups sugar
5 eggs, separated
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup chopped black walnuts
1- 3 oz. can flaked coconut (optional)
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

Cream together butter and Crisco and sugar, then add egg yolks one at a time. Mix buttermilk with baking soda until soda dissolves. Add flour and buttermilk alternately. Add vanilla, nuts and coconut. In a separate bowl, beat egg whites and cream of tartar until stiff. Fold into batter. Pour into 3 greased layer pans and bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

Frosting:

3/4 cup butter, softened
11 oz. cream cheese
6 3/4 cups sifted powdered sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
