Keep It Simple

by Jennifer Lugo

I have found in working with two year-olds, some of the best ideas are simple. This year I had a fun idea that worked really well and they loved it. We love to celebrate Elmo's birthday and to have fun with it we do crafts centered around Sesame Street. I love the Sesame Street muppets. They all have very distinct colors and eye shapes and mouths. I let my two year-olds pick a Sesame street monster. I let them paint that color on a white sheet of paper, and then let them glue the eyes, hair and nose, etc. from that monster. For example, if you wanted Oscar the Grouch you would paint a picture Green and then glue Oscar eyes, nose, and mouth cut out from an Oscar coloring page. It did not matter if the glued pieces were upside down etc. All the kids knew what Muppet they had and the color. It was so much fun to practice our color recognition and then have a fun Elmo party at the end of the week. I enjoyed it as much as the kids.
